Nicosia unveils revitalization plans for Makariou Avenue and industrial areas

Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos has announced a comprehensive revitalization strategy for the capital, centered on the redevelopment of Makariou Avenue, the former SOPAZ industrial site, and the State Fair grounds. These projects aim to modernize urban infrastructure and stimulate local economic growth. During a meeting with a delegation from the DISY party on September 23, 2026, the Mayor presented the municipal development plan and addressed the current financial landscape of the city.

Financial challenges remain a critical concern for the local administration. Mayor Prountzos noted that the city's minimum operational requirements stand at €35 million, while the state grant provided for the 2025-2026 period is capped at €22.5 million. Beyond the budget shortfall, the discussion touched upon the systemic challenges facing Nicosia as a city that remains partially occupied. The SOPAZ redevelopment, specifically, was highlighted as a cornerstone project for the municipality's long-term growth.

Local authorities are currently reviewing the specific proposals submitted by the Mayor’s office. The initiatives are scheduled to be placed before the Municipal Council for formal consideration during its upcoming sessions to determine the path forward for implementation.
