State Health Services Organization faces legal action over recruitment process

The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) in Cyprus is facing potential legal challenges following its recent recruitment process for scientific directors in its regional divisions. Sotiris Koumas, president of the Pancyprian Union of Government Doctors (PASYKI) and the sole applicant for the position in the Limassol-Paphos region, has announced his intention to take legal action after his candidacy was rejected by the organization.

Koumas argues that the selection criteria were unacceptable and improperly influenced by external factors. He specifically noted that an interview stage was introduced that was not part of the initial requirements. Conversely, OKYPY spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou stated that the Board of Directors retains the final authority for appointments, emphasizing that having a sole applicant does not automatically entitle an individual to a position. Similar controversy has emerged regarding the Nicosia region, with reports suggesting last-minute interventions to attract additional candidates.

The situation remains tense, as Koumas characterizes his pursuit of legal recourse as a matter of duty. He has alleged that the individual eventually selected for the Limassol-Paphos position did not deserve the appointment. Further developments are expected as the legal dispute proceeds.
