Five horses diagnosed with West Nile virus in Greece

Veterinary authorities in Greece confirmed on September 23, 2026, that five horses have been diagnosed with the West Nile virus. The affected animals, which all originate from the same premises, were tested between September 9 and September 18. According to the veterinary services, the horses exhibited symptoms such as fever and weakness while walking, but their condition has shown improvement in recent days, and all five remain alive.

Officials emphasized that the virus is not transmitted directly from horse to human or between horses. Instead, the infection is primarily spread through the bites of mosquitoes that have previously fed on infected birds. While the situation is currently described as being under control, authorities are focusing on implementing mosquito control measures to prevent further spread of the virus to both animal populations and the general public. No further cases have been reported, and the veterinary department continues to monitor the epidemiological situation closely.
