Organic farming in Cyprus exceeds 2027 national target

On September 23, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Christos Senekis, announced that organic farming has reached 8.6% of the country's total cultivated land. This achievement surpasses the national target of 7.5% that had been established for the end of 2027. The announcement was made in Nicosia during an information campaign marking European Organic Production Day.

Approximately 1,500 producers are currently active in the organic sector in Cyprus. Minister Senekis attributed this growth to targeted support programs, highlighting that the Ministry is allocating €22 million through the 2023-2027 Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan. These funds are intended to foster the sector and increase the prevalence of Cypriot organic goods.

While the sector has expanded successfully, the Minister emphasized that further development remains heavily dependent on consumer choices and the establishment of public trust in local organic products. The current focus remains on ensuring that a higher volume of certified organic items reaches the domestic market, as the government continues its efforts to promote the benefits of organic agriculture to the general public.
