Parliamentary committee visits the 'House of the Woman' amid rising domestic violence cases

On September 22, 2026, members of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Equal Opportunities visited the 'House of the Woman' in Nicosia to assess operational challenges facing the facility. The visit followed reports from the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO) regarding severe strain on resources and infrastructure due to an increasing volume of domestic and gender-based violence cases.

According to Scientific Director Andry Andronikou, the facility processed 5,728 calls during 2026, with 1,317 specifically related to domestic violence incidents. This surge has placed significant pressure on available staff and physical space. To help manage the growing demand for support services, authorities announced that a new hosting center for victims is scheduled to begin operations in Larnaca by February 2027 to provide necessary regional protection.
