New central prison master plan to be developed in Agioi Sozomenos

On September 23, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fytiris, met with the Deputy Minister of Culture, Clea Papaellina, to discuss the construction of new central prisons in the Agioi Sozomenos area. Representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the Department of Antiquities, and the police also attended the meeting to coordinate the project planning.

The officials decided that the new facility will be located at a distance from the local archaeological site. The master plan will focus on protecting the area's historical and archaeological heritage, with infrastructure development restricted to the northern part of the state-owned plot. The government aims to ensure a clear spatial and functional separation between the correctional facility and the ruins.

Beyond the construction, the project is viewed as an opportunity to implement interventions that will improve access to and highlight the historical significance of the site in Agioi Sozomenos. Further steps will involve the creation of a preliminary master plan in close cooperation with the Department of Antiquities to finalize the technical parameters of the prison complex.
