Israel considers expanding submarine fleet amid regional naval developments

Israeli defense officials have recommended that the country's political leadership expand its operational submarine fleet to eight vessels. This proposal, supported by Israel Defense Forces radio reports, arises from growing concerns regarding naval modernization in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly the expansion of the Turkish Navy, which currently operates 14 submarines with plans to reach 18 in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Navy is set to receive its sixth submarine, the INS Drakon, on September 24, 2026. The vessel departed from Kiel, Germany, on September 1 and traveled approximately 3,792 miles over 25 days. The delivery experienced significant delays after Norway and Denmark reportedly denied passage through their territorial waters despite the vessel sailing under a German flag. Currently, Israel views maritime security as a strategic necessity, as 98% of its foreign trade relies on sea routes, a factor made more critical by ongoing tensions in the region, including the conflict with Iran and instability in the Strait of Hormuz.

Future steps involve a political decision regarding the potential procurement of additional German-made submarines to reach the proposed fleet size of eight.
