Two arrested for illegal dumping of industrial waste in Egaleo

On September 22, 2026, Greek authorities arrested a 41-year-old foreign truck driver and a 63-year-old service station manager in Egaleo for the illegal disposal of industrial waste. The suspects were caught red-handed as they discharged highly acidic wastewater into a sewage manhole at a gas station on Kifisos Avenue, disguising the operation as a standard fuel delivery. Investigation revealed this was the fourth such illegal dumping incident within a 20-day period.

The waste originated from industrial facilities, including the Papadopoulos S.A. biscuit factory and the Attikon University General Hospital. Environmental experts from the Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEN) and the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) confirmed that the waste was being channeled directly into the Kifisos River, posing a significant risk to public health and the marine ecosystem.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the two detainees, and charges have been filed against two additional individuals related to the environmental violations. The case is now proceeding through the judicial system as investigations continue to determine the full extent of the environmental impact.
