Anorthosis faces disciplinary sanctions and considers appeal following Cyprus League match incidents

The Cyprus Football Association's (KOP) Judicial Committee issued a ruling on September 23, 2026, regarding incidents during the Cyprus League match between Anorthosis Famagusta and APOEL Nicosia, which took place on September 12, 2026. The committee penalized Anorthosis with one home match behind closed doors and a ban on away fan attendance for their next fixture. The sanctions were imposed due to the use and throwing of dangerous items, including flares, firecrackers, and smoke bombs, by supporters inside the stadium.

The club, led by Executive Director Giannis Maniatis, publicly denounced the ruling, describing it as an "unrelenting war" against the team and its fan base. The administration and figures such as Giannos Karousos have questioned the fairness and consistency of the disciplinary process, suggesting potential bias. In response, Anorthosis officially announced its intention to file an appeal with the KOP Appeals Committee to challenge the imposed penalties. Meanwhile, other decisions were issued by the committee, including a fine for Omonia Nicosia coach Henning Berg for improper conduct during a match against Apollon Limassol, and various fines against AEL Limassol for team behavior and fan disturbances.
