Residents protest against asphalt plant construction in Mitsero

On September 24, 2026, residents and representatives from eight communities, including Mitsero, Agrokipia, Malounta, Arediou, Agios Ioannis, Kato Moni, Orounta, and Meniko, gathered outside the Supreme Court in Nicosia. The protest was organized to demand the suspension of construction work for an asphalt plant being relocated from Idali to the Mitsero area. Demonstrators expressed deep frustration with the state and the Legal Service, arguing that their health and environmental concerns have been systematically ignored by authorities.

Simultaneously, a judicial hearing commenced at 10:30 a.m. to deliberate on an interim injunction requested by the communities to freeze ongoing construction, which includes land-leveling activities already initiated by the contractor. Sotiris Kyriakou, the community leader of Agrokipia, stated that the protesters seek a permanent halt to the project and may pursue the matter in European courts. While protesters acknowledge that a final judicial decision is not expected immediately, they continue to call for the revocation of construction permits to protect their region's environment and public health.
