Residents to protest at Supreme Court over relocation of asphalt plant

On September 24, 2026, residents from several communities including Mitsero, Agrokipia, Malounta, Arediou, Agios Ioannis, Kato Moni, Orounta, and Meniko are scheduled to gather outside the Supreme Court of Cyprus. The demonstration is a reaction to the government-sanctioned relocation of an asphalt plant from Idali to the Mitsero area. The head of the Agrokipia community, Sotiris Kyriakou, stated that the protesters feel abandoned by the state and the Legal Service, citing concerns over severe health and environmental risks that they believe are being ignored by officials.

Preparatory work, including land leveling, has already commenced at the site. While the protest is intended to pressure authorities, residents clarified that they do not expect a court ruling on an interim injunction to halt the transfer on the day of the demonstration. Organizers have expressed their intent to escalate the matter to European courts, arguing that the domestic legal process has failed to provide a fair resolution to the communities' grievances.
