Jure Balkovec recognized for Europa League performance and national team return

UEFA recently highlighted a powerful, last-minute goal scored by Jure Balkovec during Omonoia’s opening match in the Europa League phase. This moment remains a significant highlight of his tenure with the Nicosia-based club since he joined in January 2026, playing a vital role in their championship victory and European qualification.

Following his consistent performance at the club level, the 32-year-old left-back has been recalled to the Slovenian national team by coach Bostjan Cesar. Balkovec had been absent from the national squad since November 2025, having been omitted from the March and June call-ups. He is now preparing for his 40th international appearance, having represented his country since 2018 and participated in Euro 2024.

Currently, Omonoia is seeing twelve of its players leave the 'Elias Poullos' training center to fulfill international duties during the scheduled break. Balkovec’s return marks a significant step in his professional career as he continues to be a core figure in the Cypriot club's starting lineup.
