European commission launches automatic qualification recognition for key professions

The European Commission has introduced a new initiative as part of the 'Fair Labour Mobility Package' to facilitate the automatic recognition of professional qualifications across EU member states. This policy aims to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles for ten vital professions, with physiotherapists highlighted as the first group to benefit. By streamlining credential verification, the EU seeks to address labor shortages, support the green and digital transition, and mitigate demographic challenges across the bloc.

To support this integration, professional documents will be managed through the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet). This certified digital tool allows citizens to securely store and share diplomas, licenses, and health credentials with features like selective disclosure to ensure user privacy. While the system is optional, all member states are required to finalize their implementation of the digital wallet before Christmas 2026. Currently, only three out of the 27 EU nations have declared readiness for this transition.
