Health authorities address detection of West Nile virus

Cypriot health authorities, led by Minister of Health Neofytos Charalambides and Member of Parliament Charalambos Senekis, have addressed recent detections of the West Nile virus at a local farm. Officials are urging the public to remain calm, stating that the situation is currently under control and does not constitute a widespread health crisis.

Minister Charalambides spoke on the matter on September 24, 2026, during the International Symposium on Mountain Races in Platres. He confirmed that the health ministry has implemented all necessary protocols from the onset of the discovery. According to the minister, the presence of the virus is not a new phenomenon and, in most cases, does not lead to serious health complications for those infected.

Health services remain vigilant and are prepared to conduct targeted spraying or additional protective measures in areas where the virus is identified. Monitoring continues to prevent further transmission, with authorities promising to reinforce safety measures whenever local assessments deem it necessary.
