Cyprus research and innovation ecosystem marks 30-year milestone

The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) of Cyprus celebrated its 30th anniversary alongside the 20th European Researchers' Night, marking a significant evolution in the national scientific and business landscape. According to RIF Director General Theodoros Loukaidis, the country has moved past the foundational phase and now focuses on scaling operations, attracting private investment, and fostering human talent to transform research into concrete economic value.

Key performance indicators highlight this progress, with Cyprus currently ranking 25th out of 139 economies in the Global Innovation Index and 34th globally in the StartupBlink ecosystem index. The rise in local engagement is evidenced by a substantial increase in participation, with recent RIF calls attracting 284 proposals compared to only 60 in similar programs five to six years ago. The next phase for the ecosystem involves enhancing international reach, leveraging private capital, and ensuring that Cyprus transitions from an adopter of foreign technology to a producer of new scientific developments.

The initiative aims to bridge the gap between state resources and private enterprise to sustain long-term growth. While the focus remains on expansion and commercialization, the foundation plans to continue launching new support programs to solidify the integration of technological and scientific progress into the local market.
