OceanEye International Alliance launched at the United Nations General Assembly

On Wednesday, September 24, 2026, during the United Nations General Assembly, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney formally announced the launch of the OceanEye International Alliance for the Global Ocean Observing System.

Alexandra Cousteau, a senior advisor to Oceana and renowned ocean advocate, joined the leaders to champion the initiative. The alliance aims to utilize enhanced ocean observation data to assist governments in protecting and restoring marine ecosystems. According to Cousteau, the availability of precise data is critical for monitoring fishing activities, curbing illegal practices, and identifying areas where marine recovery is feasible.
