Nicosia Municipality clarifies status of Ledra and Onasagorou pedestrian street redevelopment

The Nicosia Municipality has formally addressed concerns raised by the Representative Committee of Merchants, Residents, and Property Owners regarding the ongoing redevelopment project of Ledra and Onasagorou streets. The municipality secured 10.8 million euros in funding through the Green Line Revitalization Program to modernize the historic commercial center based on the New European Bauhaus initiative.

The project consists of three distinct phases: Phase A, covering facade restoration, is currently underway; Phase B, also involving facade restoration, is scheduled to commence construction in October 2026; and Phase C, concerning the physical renovation of the streets, is still in the study stage. Municipal authorities emphasized that they remain committed to a structured democratic dialogue to minimize disruptions to local businesses and residents.

While the municipality has categorically rejected claims and personal attacks made in a recent statement by the Representative Committee, it confirmed that at least four meetings have already taken place with stakeholders. Officials stated that these interactions are intended to integrate public feedback into the final project design and mitigate the socioeconomic impact of the construction phase.
