Turkey issues warning over military developments in Cyprus

On September 24, 2026, the Turkish Ministry of Defence announced that it is closely monitoring military developments on the island of Cyprus. Spokesman Zeki Akturk issued a formal critique regarding the Republic of Cyprus’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military capabilities and strengthen defense cooperation with third countries.

Ankara expressed concerns that these armament activities, including the acquisition of new air defence systems, threaten the delicate security balance and undermine efforts toward peace and trust on the island. The Turkish ministry specifically rejected assurances that such systems do not pose a direct threat to Turkish Cypriots or the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), maintaining that such claims do not justify the Republic of Cyprus's actions.

In response to these developments, Turkey has stated it is taking necessary precautions and that its armed forces continue to conduct training exercises in international waters and airspace in the region.
