Critical blood shortage in Cyprus triggers surgery and transfusion delays

Cyprus is facing a severe blood shortage, with daily collections falling significantly below the required 350 units. Current donation rates range between 150 and 250 units per day, leading to critical operational challenges across public and private hospitals. Medical professionals and patient advocacy groups are warning that this deficit is directly disrupting scheduled surgical procedures and hindering the capacity of hospitals to provide essential care.

Most alarmingly, the shortage has begun impacting thalassemia patients, including children. Miltos Miltiadous, President of the Cyprus Thalassemia Association, reported that roughly 70 children are currently affected by postponed transfusions, which is critical for their development and health. Healthcare stakeholders are now calling on the Ministry of Health to implement immediate measures to attract new donors and improve the management of existing blood stocks to prevent further health risks to patients.
