European Union faces 90 billion euro energy cost surge due to Middle East conflict

Escalating military tensions in the Middle East, particularly affecting the strategic Strait of Hormuz, have triggered a sharp rise in energy costs for the European Union. In her recent State of the Union address, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed that the EU has incurred approximately 90 billion euros in additional costs for imported fossil fuels since the conflict intensified.

Crucially, this substantial financial burden represents a "war premium" rather than increased energy consumption. European economies are paying higher prices for the same volume of energy due to increased transportation costs, supply constraints, and elevated risk premiums caused by geopolitical uncertainty. This situation highlights the bloc's long-standing vulnerability regarding its heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels, which now threatens the overall competitiveness of the European economy.
