Physicians defend their role in the General Health System during parliamentary debate

Andreas Ioannou, representing the Cyprus Medical Association and a group of 150 specialized pathologists, strongly rejected allegations made by members of parliament, specifically those from AKEL, who characterized some doctors as mere "referral generators" rather than clinicians. Ioannou insisted that doctors work under strict quality indicators and maintain constant communication with the Health Insurance Organization (HIO).

Ioannou argued that the "referral generator" label is insulting to the many professionals dedicated to patient care. He emphasized that the current composition of personal physicians in the GHS is characterized by a lack of uniformity in medical specialties, noting that there were insufficient numbers of general practitioners when the system was initially launched. The debate also touched upon the cap of 2,500 patients per doctor, as the committee continues to examine the operational efficiency and patient service standards of the national health scheme.
