Workshop held to enhance Akrotiri Salt Lake ecosystem resilience

A joint workshop was held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre to discuss strategies for strengthening the resilience of the Akrotiri Salt Lake ecosystem. The event brought together experts from the British Bases, academics, researchers, and field professionals to evaluate sustainability goals and address various environmental threats facing the area.

The workshop was conducted under the ARISE Darwin project, a three-year collaborative initiative involving the British Bases, the Republic of Cyprus, the Open University of Cyprus, and the University of Kent. The project is funded through the UK government’s Darwin Plus grant scheme. Its primary objective is to implement science-based restoration efforts and effective habitat management, while facilitating stakeholder engagement to resolve key environmental issues.

During the session, participants examined various development scenarios and analyzed how these could impact the long-term sustainability targets for the wetland. The initiative aims to provide a structured approach to managing the site, with the project stakeholders continuing to discuss and refine actions to mitigate existing environmental challenges.
