Cyprus Cardiology Society launches awareness campaign for World Heart Day
The Cyprus Cardiology Society officially launched a nationwide awareness campaign for cardiovascular health on Thursday, September 24, at the Journalists' House in Nicosia. Held under the slogan "Don't miss the pulse of life. Live to its rhythm," the initiative aims to emphasize prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment of cardiovascular diseases, which currently serve as the leading cause of death in Cyprus.
Minister of Health Neophytos Charalambides, alongside the President of the Cyprus Cardiology Society Evagoras Oikonomidis and other health officials, attended the event. Data presented during the conference revealed the urgency of the situation: one in ten citizens in Cyprus lives with a heart condition, one in three faces a risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, and one in five is at risk of premature death due to such illnesses.
The campaign is supported by the Pancyprian Medical Association and sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Medochemie. It serves as a precursor to World Heart Day, observed on September 29, with the government reiterating its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare and promoting preventive medical screenings to reduce the burden of these diseases on the population.
