Cyprus launches national cardiovascular awareness campaign
The Cyprus Society of Cardiology has launched a nationwide awareness campaign titled "Don't lose the pulse of life. Live to its rhythm" ahead of World Heart Day, marked on September 29. The initiative, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and supported by the Cyprus Medical Association and Medochemie, aims to highlight the critical importance of prevention and early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.
During a press conference at the Journalists' House on September 24, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides emphasized the necessity of systematic investment in preventative care. Dr. Ira Heracleous, chairwoman of the national committee for the management of cardiovascular diseases, reported alarming statistics: one in ten people in Cyprus currently lives with heart disease, one in three risks dying from a cardiovascular condition, and one in five faces the threat of premature death. These diseases remain the leading cause of death in the country.
Experts and officials stressed that these outcomes are largely preventable through healthier lifestyle choices, including regular exercise, balanced nutrition, weight management, and smoking cessation. The campaign seeks to encourage citizens to pursue timely medical screenings to avoid serious, life-altering cardiac events.
