Cyprus records high share of dangerous road freight in 2025

According to data released by Eurostat on Thursday, Cyprus recorded the third-highest share of dangerous goods transported by road within the European Union in 2025. The country's share reached 7.5% of its total road transport performance, significantly higher than the EU average of 4%. The statistics are based on tonne-kilometres, accounting for both the weight of the goods and the distance covered.

Finland leads the EU with 9.8% of dangerous goods in road transport, followed by Ireland at 7.8% and Cyprus at 7.5%. Conversely, Lithuania reported the lowest share at 0.7%, while Portugal and Slovakia each recorded 1.9%. These dangerous goods include categories such as flammable liquids, toxic substances, and explosives.

Across the European Union, total road freight transport reached 13.29 billion tonnes in 2025, marking a 1.8% increase compared to 2024. The largest commodity category by weight was ores and products of mining and quarrying, which accounted for 3.04 billion tonnes, or 22.9% of the total volume.
