Cyprus boosts mountain and rural tourism through infrastructure and hotel investment

Deputy Tourism Minister Kostas Koumis announced a significant push for rural and mountain tourism in Cyprus during the 'Mountain Areas, Special Interest of Tourism and Community Resilience' conference held on September 24, 2026, in Agros. As part of the ongoing Mountain Games Cyprus 2026, the government has completed 152 infrastructure projects worth €7 million aimed at revitalizing remote and mountainous areas. Additionally, €6.9 million has been approved to upgrade 46 hotels and tourism businesses in these regions, funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Koumis emphasized that the Troodos region is being positioned as a year-round destination by leveraging its authenticity and natural appeal. The initiative aligns with the National Tourism Strategy 2035, which prioritizes nature and cultural tourism as key segments. During the four-day event, held during the European Week of Sport, the Troodos UNESCO Global Geopark is hosting 35 distinct activities across eight villages. The government continues to focus on these investments to meet the rising demand for outdoor, nature-based experiences that support local community resilience.
