Limassol hosts events to address urban cycling challenges

As part of the 2026 European Mobility Week, Limassol held several events focused on urban mobility and the challenges faced by cyclists. On September 18, a public discussion titled 'Creating an inclusive city' was held at the Molos Amphitheatre, co-organized by Friends of the Earth and the Limassol Municipality. Experts, including Dr. Paris Nikolaou from TEPAK and architect Socrates Stratis, noted that 92% of trips in Limassol are currently made by private car. They criticized current state policy for favoring car traffic and placing the burden on vulnerable road users, while rejecting the notion that local cycling habits are purely cultural.

Separately, a cycling tour took place last Saturday along the Garyllis Linear Park to identify infrastructure gaps. Participants visited the site of a future mobility hub, where municipal representatives presented development plans. The city continues to support its cycling network, including a partnership with Nextbike Cyprus, which has operated in Limassol since 2012. The service currently manages 700 bicycles across 90 designated stations, providing an alternative for residents and visitors to commute without personal vehicles.
