Fatal military training accident in Kazakhstan's Caspian Sea

At least 14 soldiers died during a military training exercise in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan after sudden, severe weather conditions caused them to be swept into the Caspian Sea. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, 2026, during the disembarkation of personnel from a patrol boat. Out of the 19 soldiers involved in the accident, three were rescued, while 14 were confirmed dead following the recovery of the remaining bodies on September 25.

In response to the tragedy, Kazakh authorities, led by the Prosecutor General's Office, have launched a formal investigation. Five senior military officers, including the first deputy chief of the Navy, have been arrested on charges of negligence and violation of navigation safety rules. Investigators are currently examining whether weather forecasts were ignored and the technical state of the vessel involved. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered a government commission to determine the circumstances of the incident and provide support to the victims' families, while Minister of Defense Dauren Kosanov is overseeing the probe.
