Balcony collapse at apartment building in Limassol triggers mass evacuation

On Thursday morning, September 24, 2026, a balcony on the fifth floor of the 'Roussos Olympic Palace' apartment complex in central Limassol collapsed, falling onto a fourth-floor balcony. Authorities reported that no injuries occurred during the incident. The building, which consists of 56 apartments, had previously been designated as a dangerous structure by the Limassol District Local Government Organisation (EOA), and evacuation procedures were already underway. Following the collapse, police, Civil Defence, and firefighters secured the area, leading to the temporary evacuation of the building under an Interior Ministry order.

Residents have been relocated to temporary accommodation for an initial period of two days. The president of the Limassol EOA, Yiannis Tsouloftas, confirmed that the owners must now appoint a civil engineer to conduct structural repairs to address the safety hazards. This is not the first such incident for the complex, as a similar failure occurred in 2022. Officials have highlighted that managing the approximately 1,100 potentially hazardous buildings in the district remains a significant challenge, citing current legal tools for evacuation as slow and ineffective. Future efforts include ongoing inspections of hundreds of other structures to mitigate further risks to public safety.
