Balcony collapse at apartment complex in Limassol

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, a balcony at the Roussos Olympic Palace apartment complex in downtown Limassol collapsed. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when a fifth-floor balcony gave way and landed on the balcony of the fourth floor. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The building, which contains 56 apartments, had already been officially designated as a dangerous structure, and legal procedures for its evacuation were ongoing.

Authorities, including the Police, Fire Service, Civil Defense, and the Limassol District Local Government Organization (EOA), responded immediately to the site. The building was evacuated, and approximately 30 to 56 residents have been relocated to temporary accommodation for two days under an Interior Ministry order. Yiannis Tsouloftas, the president of the EOA, confirmed that the complex had a history of structural issues, with a similar incident reported in 2022.

Following this event, officials highlighted that about 1,100 buildings in Limassol are considered potentially dangerous, with 60 currently requiring immediate evacuation. Mr. Tsouloftas noted that existing legal tools for managing these evacuations are time-consuming and ineffective. Discussions are currently underway in Parliament to modernize relevant legislation to provide local authorities with more direct intervention powers, such as the ability to seal buildings and mandate repairs without waiting for lengthy owner consent.
