Building collapse follows explosion in central Athens

A powerful explosion rocked the Plaka district in central Athens on the morning of September 25, 2026, causing the total collapse of an old two-story building on Lysikratous Street. The blast occurred at approximately 07:35 and was heard throughout the city center, damaging surrounding properties and parked vehicles. Three people, including a passerby and two women rescued from an adjacent building, sustained minor injuries and were transported to Georgios Gennimatas Hospital.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident, with initial reports pointing toward a potential natural gas leak. The site has been secured by 24 firefighters and specialized units from the 1st EMAK disaster response team. Gas and power supplies were shut off as a safety precaution.

Rescue operations are ongoing as officials attempt to locate five individuals who may have been in the building: an elderly couple residing on the second floor and three tourists staying in an Airbnb unit on the first floor. Emergency teams, assisted by trained dogs, continue to search the debris. The investigation into the exact cause of the explosion is being led by the Fire Service’s arson investigation unit, while local officials perform a thorough structural assessment of the surrounding area.
