Internal political friction grows between DIKO and Finance Minister in Cyprus

Tensions have escalated between the leader of the Democratic Party (DIKO), Nicolas Papadopoulos, and the Cypriot Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, regarding the management of government policies and the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. Following a public confrontation, Papadopoulos held a telephone conversation with President Nikos Christodoulides, who is currently in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly, to express dissatisfaction with the Finance Ministry's performance.

Papadopoulos argues that Keravnos is obstructing the implementation of critical government agreements, including those related to the GSI, provident funds, bail-in affected depositors, local government funding, and agreements with livestock farmers. While the Finance Minister has dismissed these allegations as "nonsense," the situation has led to calls for greater government cohesion. Parliamentary spokesperson Panikos Leonidou has expressed an intent to mediate between the parties to restore stability, suggesting that the dispute reflects broader operational disagreements within the coalition government rather than personal grievances.

Currently, there is pressure for President Christodoulides to intervene upon his return to clarify the government's stance. The ongoing conflict has raised speculation about the potential for ministerial changes should the impasse regarding the execution of presidential policy priorities persist.
