Cyprus digital education report highlights AI integration and persistent inequalities

The 2026 report from the EURYDICE Network, titled "Digital education at school in Europe 2026," provides a comprehensive evaluation of 38 European educational systems, focusing on Cyprus. The study assesses infrastructure, student skills, teacher training, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into curricula.

Cyprus is identified as one of only 12 European systems that have officially incorporated AI-related skills into their national curriculum. Since the 2024/25 academic year, these skills have been taught within secondary informatics courses, requiring students to identify AI applications, manage prompts, and critically evaluate AI outputs. Despite this progress, the report highlights a "two-speed" digital education reality in Cyprus, noting persistent socioeconomic disparities in access to technology and significant training gaps among educators. Specifically, six out of ten teachers report inadequate training in areas such as visual programming.

While the national framework for AI in education continues to evolve, the current data, which incorporates findings from the ICILS 2023 international study, suggests that closing the professional development gap for staff remains a primary challenge for the Ministry of Education to ensure equitable digital learning opportunities.
