Paphos authorities expand surveillance network to curb vandalism

Following a strategic meeting held on August 27 at the Paphos Town Hall, municipal authorities in the Paphos district are implementing a series of measures to address a sharp rise in vandalism and anti-social behavior in public spaces. Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou confirmed that the municipality has already deployed 55 surveillance cameras and is currently coordinating with state departments to authorize an additional 60 units.

The deployment of the new cameras is pending the installation of specific infrastructure, including mounting poles, solar panels for independent power, and storage memory cards capable of holding 20 to 30 days of footage. Onisiforou emphasized that these efforts require a unified approach from all district municipalities to ensure the protection of public property. A established protocol between local authorities and the police will govern the storage and review of recorded footage to ensure compliance and proper usage.

Discussions are ongoing regarding necessary legislative changes to support these security initiatives. The local administration continues to hold regular consultations with state officials to expedite the transition to the expanded surveillance system.
