Diplomatic efforts for Cyprus talks in New York

President Nikos Christodoulides has engaged in high-level meetings in New York with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, aiming to facilitate a tripartite meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed that Christodoulides presented proposals to Guterres and is prepared to extend his stay in New York to hold a joint meeting if there is positive feedback from the Turkish Cypriot side. International relations expert Petros Zarounas noted that the current timing is critical, as this may be the final opportunity for such an informal meeting before Guterres concludes his term at the end of 2026.

Simultaneously, domestic tensions in Nicosia reached the Cyprus Forum 2026. Mayors Charalambos Prountzos of Nicosia and Mehmet Harmanci of the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia withdrew from the event after organizers altered the official designation of Harmanci’s title. The move followed pressure from political quarters, including the ELAM party, which objected to the terminology used. This incident highlights the ongoing sensitivity regarding official status and recognition within the internal political landscape of Cyprus as high-level international efforts remain fluid.
