Tripartite meeting on Cyprus issue fails to materialize in New York

A proposed tripartite meeting between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres did not take place in New York during the UN General Assembly. President Christodoulides stated he was willing to extend his stay to facilitate such a meeting, but reported that the Turkish side rejected the proposal. Conversely, Erhurman claimed there was no sufficient groundwork or evidence of progress to justify the meeting, accusing the Greek Cypriot side of political maneuvering.

Tensions were further exacerbated by a diplomatic letter sent by the Republic of Cyprus to UN member states, requesting that international officials refrain from meeting with Turkish Cypriot representatives in New York. Erhurman criticized this move as an attempt to stifle communication. Christodoulides highlighted that he presented new ideas regarding the methodology and confidence-building measures, which were well-received by the UN, but noted the absence of a willing partner for negotiations. He also received assurances from the UN Security Council permanent members that the established basis for a solution remains unchanged.

Looking ahead, the UN Secretary-General has reaffirmed his commitment to the Cyprus issue until the end of his tenure. Sources indicate that the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, is expected to return to Cyprus in October for further discussions with both leaders.
