Tuberculosis cases rise in Cyprus amid global health concerns

Tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is experiencing a resurgence globally and within Cyprus. The disease, which primarily affects the lungs and spreads through respiratory droplets, was largely contained during the mid-20th century due to improved hygiene and the development of antimicrobial medication. However, current geopolitical factors driving mass migration have created conditions for the disease's comeback.

In Cyprus, public health authorities reported 81 new cases of tuberculosis in 2023. This resurgence is exacerbated by the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, which complicates treatment protocols. Health experts emphasize the necessity for continuous population monitoring and the urgent development of more effective diagnostic tests to manage the spread of the infection effectively.

While medical advancements previously reduced the threat of TB, the current combination of international displacement and evolving bacterial resistance necessitates renewed vigilance. Moving forward, the focus remains on enhancing health surveillance measures to prevent a further rise in infection rates and related mortality.
