Political realignment efforts among Cypriot center parties

Four months after the 2026 parliamentary elections, Cyprus's center-leaning parties are exploring ways to regain political influence following poor electoral performances. DIKO leader Nikolas Papadopoulos and DIPA leader Marios Karoyian have engaged in high-level discussions regarding a potential merger or a formal strategic alliance. These talks follow an electoral cycle where DIKO secured 10% of the vote and eight parliamentary seats, while both EDEK (3.3%) and DIPA (3.1%) failed to gain parliamentary representation.

While the combined electoral strength of these three parties totals approximately 16.4%, they currently lack a unified decision-making process. The objective of these potential negotiations is to consolidate their influence ahead of the 2028 presidential elections, as President Christodoulides is currently viewed as being in an advantageous position due to the fragmentation of these parties. Internal dialogues are ongoing within DIKO to determine its strategy, with potential outcomes ranging from a complete merger into a new political entity to the establishment of a formal cooperative framework.
