Fire erupts on cargo ferry Blue Carrier 2 near Mykonos

A significant emergency operation was launched on the morning of September 25, 2026, following a fire aboard the cargo ferry Blue Carrier 2. The vessel was sailing north of Mykonos when a fire broke out in one of its garage spaces, reportedly originating from a truck. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 166 trucks and 29 passenger vehicles.

All 29 individuals on board—consisting of 28 crew members and one truck driver—were successfully evacuated. The passengers escaped using the ship's lifeboats and were subsequently rescued by nearby passing vessels, with arrangements made to transport them safely to the island of Tinos. No injuries were reported among those involved.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with the ship currently positioned approximately 4.5 nautical miles north of Mykonos and 7.5 nautical miles east of Tinos. Multiple fire-fighting vessels from Syros, Lavrio, and Piraeus, supported by the Hellenic Coast Guard and private vessels, were deployed to contain the blaze and secure the area. The Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PENEN) released footage showing the crew's initial attempts to combat the fire on deck.
