Firefighting operation continues on Blue Carrier 2 vessel near Mykonos

A major emergency response is underway following a fire that broke out on the morning of September 25, 2026, aboard the cargo vessel Blue Carrier 2. The ship, which was transporting 166 trucks and 29 passenger vehicles, was sailing approximately 4.5 nautical miles north of Mykonos when the fire originated in one of the garage decks. All 29 people on board, consisting of 28 crew members and one truck driver, were safely evacuated using lifeboats and transferred to the nearby island of Tinos. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The firefighting operation involves the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Fire Department, and various support vessels. While the exact cause remains under investigation, officials suspect the fire may have started in a truck. On September 25, the tugboat Aigaion Pelagos was deployed to assist in cooling the ship's hull and controlling the temperatures inside. Efforts to extinguish the blaze continued into the following day, with the vessel held off the coast of Tinos. Attica Ferries has engaged specialized salvage teams to manage the situation and mitigate potential environmental impacts while authorities continue to monitor the ship's stability.
