Larnaka 2030 submits planning application for new arts and culture centre

The Larnaka 2030 organisation has officially submitted a planning application for the construction of a new arts and culture centre, a flagship infrastructure project for the city’s designation as the European Capital of Culture 2030. Located at the site of the former refineries, the facility will span approximately 8,000 square metres. While local media sources report differing cost estimates between 30 and 35 million euros, the project is considered essential for the upcoming cultural events and as a long-term urban legacy.

The project’s design was commissioned by the Petrolina group, which also covered initial development costs, and was developed by the internationally renowned firm Foster + Partners in collaboration with the local architecture office UDS Architects. The design features a complex with an 800-seat theatre and various exhibition spaces intended for both local and international artistic activities.

Larnaka 2030 officials, including Director General Andreas Karakatsanis, have urgently requested that state authorities fast-track the permitting process. They argue that the strict and inflexible timeline associated with the European Capital of Culture title requires immediate action to avoid delays in the subsequent tendering and construction phases. The organisation aims to ensure the centre is fully operational in time for the 2030 events.
