Cypriot MPs participate in inter-parliamentary conference on EU budget in Dublin

Cypriot Members of Parliament Christiana Erotokritou and Savia Orphanidou participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union, held in Dublin on September 25, 2026. The discussions focused on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028–2034 and the European Commission's proposals regarding own resources for the EU budget.

During the sessions, Erotokritou emphasized that European solidarity must be at the core of resource allocation, ensuring a fair distribution of burdens. She highlighted that for the EU to meet rising demands in defense, energy, security, and the green transition, the union requires increased financial resources rather than just assuming new responsibilities without backing. Specifically addressing Cyprus, she noted the country's unique challenges as an island nation, citing high transportation costs and vulnerability to external shocks, such as the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

The participants stressed that new EU priorities must not undermine traditional cohesion and agricultural policies. The conference served as a platform for legislative representatives to align on the financial requirements necessary for a more competitive and equitable Europe, focusing on balancing fiscal responsibility with the ambition to address modern geopolitical and climate-related challenges.
