Zelenskyy requests urgent funding to address Ukraine's $27 billion defense gap

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued an urgent call to Western allies for $27 billion in additional financial support to bridge a critical funding gap. This amount is required to sustain military operations, specifically for the procurement and domestic production of drones and missiles, as well as personnel costs and survivor compensation. Zelenskyy warned that if these funds are not secured through orders placed in October and November, Ukraine will face severe shortages of critical weaponry by early 2027, particularly in January, February, and March.

The shortfall arose after Ukraine exhausted its second-half budget earlier in the year to meet immediate frontline demands. Zelenskyy has formally requested that the European Commission accelerate the disbursement of the second installment of a loan package to facilitate these essential defense purchases. While the European Union has already committed 30 billion euros to Ukraine in 2026, the current financial deficit remains a significant hurdle. Kyiv is currently engaged in ongoing consultations with EU officials and the International Monetary Fund to secure the necessary capital to bolster national defense against escalating Russian ballistic missile and drone threats.
