President Christodoulides addresses the 81st UN General Assembly on the Cyprus issue

At the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides called for renewed political will to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue, aiming for a Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation. Addressing the assembly of 200 nations, he urged Turkish Cypriots to view reunification as a unique opportunity for common prosperity.

Christodoulides strongly criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his perceived hypocrisy, noting that while Erdogan invokes the UN Charter regarding Palestine, he continues to occupy over one-third of Cyprus. The Cypriot President emphasized that the survival of his nation relies on adherence to international law, explicitly refuting Erdogan’s recent calls for the international community to recognize the separatist entity in the occupied north.

While the address focused on the national cause, some local media critiques argued that the President failed to adequately detail ongoing concerns, such as the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties by foreign investors, illegal settlement policies, and the cultural destruction occurring within the occupied territories. Commentators further questioned the consistency of the administration's reliance on international law, citing Cyprus's current opposition to suspending the European Union's association agreement with Israel as a contradiction to its own stance on human rights.
