European Commission confirms stable natural gas supplies ahead of winter

The European Commission and member states confirmed on September 24, 2026, that the European Union's natural gas supply remains stable. During a meeting of the Gas Coordination Group, officials verified that supplies for protected consumers are secured under existing European regulations, despite current storage levels being lower than historical averages.

While the supply is stable, the Commission highlighted a volatile global energy market characterized by high prices and unpredictability. The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) presented preliminary findings on the continent's winter readiness. Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen noted that the situation is being monitored closely in cooperation with member states and relevant stakeholders.

Looking ahead, EU energy ministers are scheduled to discuss energy issues at an informal council meeting in Dublin. A comprehensive winter preparedness report, incorporating the latest assessments, is expected to be released on October 8, 2026. The Gas Coordination Group will reconvene on the same date to continue its oversight of the European energy market.
