Cyprus announces major pension reform to increase beneficiary payments
On September 25, 2026, the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance of Cyprus, Marinos Mousiouttas, announced a comprehensive pension reform aimed at modernizing the national social security system. The initiative is structured around four primary objectives: improving pension amounts, ensuring justice and transparency, providing greater choice for beneficiaries, and strengthening the Social Insurance Fund.
The reform will directly impact approximately 123,000 pensioners, who will receive increases ranging from 5% to 55% depending on their individual circumstances. A specific highlight of the plan is that more than 50,000 retirees are expected to see their monthly income rise by over 100 euros within the next five years. Priority is being given to those currently living on low incomes to address immediate financial instability.
The government explains that these changes are necessary due to evolving demographics and labor patterns, noting that a system that once served society successfully now requires updates to maintain its long-term sustainability. The reform represents a strategic effort to ensure that the social insurance structure remains capable of providing dignified support for the elderly population as living conditions and life expectancy continue to change.
