Skevi Koukouma receives the 10th POGO Award for women's contribution

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, Skevi Koukouma, former General Secretary of POGO and former AKEL Member of Parliament for Famagusta, was honored with the 10th 'Kleio Christodoulidou and Katina Nikolaou' Women's Contribution Award. The ceremony took place at the Eleftheria Square theater in Nicosia, hosted by the Women's Movement POGO.

Speakers at the event, including POGO General Secretary Eleni Evarorou, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, and Commissioner for Gender Equality Josie Christodoulou, praised Koukouma's long-standing dedication to human rights, gender equality, and social justice. Her career is noted for advocating for the protection of motherhood, breastfeeding support, the criminalization of sexism, and providing a voice to the women who suffered sexual violence in 1974. Beyond domestic efforts, she represented Cyprus in international parliamentary forums such as the OSCE and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Eleni Evarorou emphasized that the award does not signify the end of Koukouma's public service, as she remains active in collective social struggles. The ceremony underscored that her political legacy is defined by selfless service rather than the holding of offices, with participants describing the recognition as a deserved tribute to a lifetime of advocacy for the rights of women and refugees.
