Cyprus Olympic House celebrates 20th anniversary

Cyprus celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Olympic House in Nicosia on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The building serves as the permanent headquarters for the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) and various national sporting federations. It was officially opened on September 26, 2006, following a rapid construction period of only 20 months after the foundation stone was laid on January 12, 2005.

The project was designed by architects Eleftheria Sergidou and Vasilis Pasiourtides following a national competition. Its architectural concept reflects three dimensions of the Olympic ideal: the universal, the historical, and the sporting. The 2006 inauguration was a significant event, attended by then International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, COC president Kikis N. Lazarides, and then-president of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos. Other notable attendees included then House president Demetris Christofias and IOC member the late Lambis Nicolaou.

The COC stated that the building was intended as an investment in the future of the nation, focusing on the Olympic spirit and youth development. At the time of its inception, leadership emphasized that the facility was meant to be more than just infrastructure, acting as a cornerstone for Cypriot sports and society.
