Fugitive 19-year-old prisoner recaptured in Cyprus

A 19-year-old Syrian national, who escaped from the Lakatamia police detention center on the night of September 25, 2026, was recaptured by police on September 27 in Limassol. The prisoner had escaped by punching through a metal window grate in his cell, with his absence discovered during an evening headcount at 7:45 p.m. Following a three-day intensive manhunt, police successfully located him, though officials have emphasized that the successful apprehension does not diminish the gravity of the security breach that allowed the escape.

In connection with the incident, the prisoner's 45-year-old uncle was arrested and remanded in custody for five days by the Nicosia District Court on charges of complicity after the fact.
