Cyprus police conduct island-wide security and traffic enforcement operations

Over the past few days, the Cyprus Police conducted a series of island-wide security operations aimed at preventing serious crime and maintaining public order. Initial operations resulted in 12 arrests for offenses including assault, carrying weapons, and drink-driving. During these checks, police inspected 815 vehicles and 1,052 individuals, issuing 362 traffic reports, including 128 for speeding and 23 for alcohol-related violations, while 10 vehicles were impounded. Subsequent nights saw further operations, with five arrests reported on one occasion and four on another, covering offenses like drug-related driving, public disorder, and illegal residency.

In addition to general crime prevention, authorities launched targeted campaigns in Nicosia and Paphos focusing on personal mobility devices, specifically electric scooters. In Nicosia, 36 reports were issued and 22 devices were seized for suspected illegal use on major thoroughfares. Paphos recorded similar enforcement, with reports highlighting 34 to 48 violations, including riding in prohibited areas, failing to wear helmets, and carrying cargo on scooters. Police stated these measures are part of ongoing efforts to reduce traffic accidents and enforce local mobility laws, with patrols continuing daily across urban areas.
